The Brittany is a top gundog in its homeland and increasingly popular in the UK. From the Brittany region of north-west France, the breed was founded in the 1800s when a local spaniel called ‘fougeres’ was crossed with pointers and setters left by visiting British gentry.

The Brittany is small for a pointing dog, with a short cobby body, spaniel-like head, bobtail and distinctive brisk gait. This agile, affectionate and biddable dog works closely with its handler. If its boundless energy is properly channelled, it is an excellent companion in active homes with children. It is usually friendly to other dogs but has a high prey drive towards smaller pets.

This breed is a good choice for sportsmen involved in rough shooting and falconry. It is a stylish worker and, although few in number, very successful at competition: since arriving in the UK six field trial champions, of which three are dual champions, have been made up.
