The Burley Field Jacket from Sporting Saint does exactly that, and more.
This surprisingly lightweight jacket is made from durable military-grade materials and is fully waterproof and windproof, without being bulky. The ripstop material of the outer shell is a cotton/polyester blend in an attractive khaki green colour. The sizing is such that you’ve room to wear an extra layer underneath, such as a fleece or gilet, which I think you’d need on seriously cold days, but on your average winter day the jacket alone will keep you warm and dry.
In terms of pockets, there’s every option you could ever need: zipped handwarmer pockets, spacious zipped front pockets and a plethora of inner pockets suitable for your phone, wallet, keys etc. The main front pockets are deep and angled, with storm flaps over the zipped opening for security and added waterproofing.
The jacket has a deep, scooped tail with a poachers pocket, which, when the tail is ‘released’ using the jacket’s two side zips, is easily accessible and roomy enough for a couple of pheasant. The longer tail also keeps you dry if you need to take a seat outside when it’s wet.
One of the real stars of this coat, aside from its practicality and weatherproofing, is its hood. So often on coats the hoods are ineffective (and I often feel I look a bit daft once they’re up), but this one is just brilliant. It’s a good size, well-shaped and comes far enough forward to actually shield you from the rain, while the mouldable peak adjuster means you can shape it to suit. There’s also a velcro strap on the rear of the hood to allow you to adjust the depth.
The other feature I particularly like, especially as someone with long arms, is the adjustable neoprene cuffs. I regularly end up with freezing cold wrists when jackets ride up, but these stay snugly in place, even when you’re active, and are really comfortable, offering added protection from the elements.
The waist of the jacket is adjustable via a drawstring, to give a more fitted look, and there are two neat little whistle pockets above the left chest pocket.
This is a really practical and robust jacket for those out working their dogs. It’s comfortable, offers great freedom of movement and has kept me dry on some really wet and windy days out with the dog.
Available in sizes XS (8) – XXL (18). A men’s version is also available.
